Ways Of Giving

Giving is a very personal decision. CFIS donors impact the school in many ways, and often align themselves with specific projects or programs. There are a number of way in which you can assist with your gift to CFIS this year. Of course, if there is piece of the school that is close to your heart but not mentioned here, please do let us know.

We ask that you consider becoming a donor with a gift to our general fund or designated to one of these current priorities:

apple1Securities & Capital Assets

Gifts such as securities, real estate, art or other capital assets (Public and Private) can be received as campaign contributions. These gifts should be receipted at fair market value at time of sale and sold immediately. The provisions of the Income Tax Act should be referenced and adhered to. The May 2, 2006 Canadian Federal budget included the elimination of capital gains tax on donations of publicly traded securities. Donations of publicly listed securities to public charities (such as CFIS, CILF or the CFIS Advancement Society) will be exempted from capital gains taxation.

Refer to our reference sheet on donating securites and stock options for details.

Legacy Giving

Your legacy to CFIS is important. Leaving a gift to CFIS in your will or life insurance policy are just a few examples of the gift donations you can contribute that will attribute your name as part of the school’s history. By donating your gift to CFIS, you and / or your loved ones’ contribution will be remembered for years to come. We can help you achieve your philanthropic goals and maximize your income tax savings. By making a planned gift and telling us about it, you allow CFIS to celebrate your legacy while you are still with us.

Brooke_ManteiGifts In-kind (GIK) – products and/or services – Your gifts to CFIS do not always need to come in the form of direct money. You can also donate products and services that would be useful to CFIS. In-kind products can be tax receipted at 100% of its fair market value. In-kind services cannot be tax receipted.

Gifts of real and cultural property – You can donate real estate or property to CFIS as a source of support. CFIS will have to consider whether the gift is in the best interest of the school and will then sell the property as soon as feasible.

Ways to Give:

  • Bequests in a will
  • Gifts of life insurance
  • Charitable giving annuities
  • Charitable remainder trusts
  • Gifts in kind and real/cultural property

Leverage your Gift

Corporate Matching

Many employers offer their employees a Corporate Matching Gift Program. If you make a gift to CFIS and your company has a matching gift program, all you usually need to do is notify your employer that you have made a gift and to what amount and they will send an additional gift to our campaign. There are approximately 200 companies in Calgary that offer matching gift programs so check with yours to see if this option is available.

United Way Campaign

uw_logoParticipating companies generally direct their matching donation to the general fund that benefits several programs throughout Calgary. Another opportunity to leverage your gift is to make your annual contribution to United Way as a designated gift to CFIS instead (see Governance for charitable numbers).

Cash, Cheque, or VISA

An outright gift, with no conditions, for which a charitable tax receipt can be issued. Gifts over $20 qualify for a charitable tax receipt.

Pledged Gift Schedules – Multi-year pledging can be an excellent way to make your gift more feasible as a donation over time rather than in one lump sum. Pledges can be made annually, semi-annually or even monthly.
