At CFIS, students in Grades 5 and 6 begin band as their designated music class. Some of our current Grade 4 students have chosen their instrument for next year. New students who enter CFIS in Grades 5 and upwards will also be required to choose an instrument from the list of those available.
We are holding the 2013-14 Instrument Rental Information Evening at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, June 19th, in the Band Room. The goal of this information session is to facilitate an understanding of the music programme at CFIS, how to rent the appropriate instrument, and how to arrange personal lessons for your child if you wish.
A representative from St. John's music will be joining us to discuss the rental options. Also, you will have the opportunity to set up your rental arrangement so that your child's instrument will be ready and labelled for them when they begin school in September. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us. We highly recommend that all parents attend this presentation. Don't miss out on this great opportunity to get your child started in the right musical direction!

Today, students in Grade 2 and Grades 4 to 9 attended a presentation from Kenyan "Maasai Mamas" Mama Leah and Mama Monica. The ladies, who are both artisans for Free The Children, are visiting Canada for the first time. Mama Leah is the leader of over 600 Maasai women who work eight hours per day, beading everything from necklaces to designs on leather purses. Mama Leah provides for her family and sends her children to school through a program known as the "Me to We Artisans". Mama Monica provides for her family through Free The Children's alternative income program.
Water is the thread that runs throughout Free The Children's international development model. It allows girls to go to school and women to earn a living. It gives families the ability to cook and clean their food safely and reduces illnesses in marginalized communities where one out of four deaths in children under the age of five is due to a water-related disease. Spencer West's "We Walk 4 Water" walk from Edmonton to Calgary is promoting universal access to clean water. Mama Monica and Mama Leah are in Canada to support his journey and to share their stories. Hearing these strong women talk about their daily lives and the positive impact that access to clean water can have on their communities is an important lesson for us all.

Tomorrow, students in Grades 2 and 4 to 9 will get the chance to hear two Kenyan Maasai Mamas share stories of their journey. Mama Leah and Mama Monica are in Canada for their first visit ever. These women are here to be a part of and support Spencer West’s "We Walk 4Water" campaign (pictured above), which will see him undertake an epic 300-kilometre walk from Edmonton to Calgary to raise money for Free The Children’s Water Initiative.
In a show of solidarity for Spencer’s journey, Mama Leah and Mama Monica are undertaking their own journey. Every day, people around the world spend 200 million hours gathering water - and it is usually women and girls who carry these heavy loads. Mama Leah and Mama Monica are both strong women who are striving to change the status quo for their community members. They are leaders in their communities, and are proud to share a little bit about their Maasai and Kipsigi culture with CFIS. We look forward to welcoming them in our school, and learning more about their culture.
Their presentation will take place at 2:45 p.m. on Wed., May 15th, in the elementary gymnasium. Students are not required to wear formal uniforms tomorrow (it is a regular uniform day).
